Apple Watch Series 2

The Apple Watch Series 2 brings advanced fitness-tracking features that make it more useful than many of the other smartwatches we've reviewed. But it's still a considerable investment for a device you don't really need.

Built-in GPS. Waterproof to 164 feet. Brighter screen and faster performance than original Apple Watch. Accurate fitness tracking. Plenty of third-party apps.

Expensive. Battery life has not improved from predecessor. Lacks integrated sleep tracking and continuous heart rate monitoring when not working out.

The Apple Watch Series 2 is the best smartwatch-fitness tracker hybrid we've seen, and better than the original watch thanks to a brighter screen, faster performance, and a waterproof design.

GPS, waterproofing and faster software make Apple's new smartwatch finally click, but don't expect huge battery life.

The new Apple Watch is faster, has a far better OS, onboard GPS, a brighter display and is waterproof to 50 meters in salt or fresh water.

Same battery life, mostly. GPS activity causes a big hit on battery life for running. Lacks always-on display. A tad thicker and heavier. Requires an iPhone to work.

The Apple Watch returns in a made-for-sports upgrade that adds swim functions and GPS, but anyone who's not a runner or swimmer should consider the Apple Watch Series 1 instead.

Apple Watch, the re-review: One year after its launch, is it worth buying?

At 1-year-old and newly discounted, the Apple Watch is a study in contradictions; it's the best overall smartwatch out there, but not something you should feel compelled to buy.

Beautifully constructed. Handles messages well. A solid fitness tracker. Hundreds of apps. Can send and receive voice calls via an iPhone. Lots of design choices. Apple Pay-enabled. Stores music for local playback over Bluetooth.

Battery only lasts a little more than a day. Most models and configurations cost more than they should. Requires an iPhone to work. Interface can be confusing. Many apps load slowly. Lacks built-in GPS.

A year old and even more affordable, the Apple Watch remains the best designed and most capable smartwatch you can buy -- but we're hoping that the inevitable sequel makes it more of a must-have product.
